PM Reiterates Commitment to Follow ASEAN Charter

PHNOM PENH: Prime Minister Hun Sen has once again announced that he will follow the ASEAN Charter as Cambodia to start chairing the regional group next month. The Prime Minister says that as the chair of ASEAN, the head of the Royal Government of Cambodia has declared that it is not right to become the chair of ASEAN and not invite all ASEAN members to the full meeting, and when ASEAN members are less than 10 countries it’s not called ASEAN.

He says, "It is not possible if it still ASEAN 9, must rescued from ASEAN 9 to ASEAN 10, which is the most important thing for ASEAN. The situation in Myanmar is one thing, but before helping Myanmar to have a real ASEAN, this is not a joke, otherwise it will create a dangerous habit: the ASEAN chair does not like anyone to be invited in the meeting is not called ASEAN, where is ASEAN values?"

The ASEAN Constitution was adopted and came into force on 15 December 2008 by a meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the 10 ASEAN countries at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, Indonesia during the 13th ASEAN Summit 2007 in Singapore.
